Find information online Find Information on the Internet

Have you tried the Library resources first? While there is a lot of information on the Internet, it might not be of the kind and quality you need.

It may be better to use the Library's databases| for articles from newspapers and journals.

You can also use the Library's subject guides| for locating websites that the Library staff recommend.

Searching "academic" content search engines

The Library has registered its SFX open url resolver with Google Scholar| so that there is an opportunity to check the Library's catalogue and also participating databases to see if an articlle is available: look for the SFX symbol

Please note that not all databases, subscribed to by the University, currently participate in this scheme.

Search tips

Trying to find information on the Internet can be a very good way... to waste a lot of valuable time! So before you start out, remember:

  • No search engine indexes all the pages on the Web. Different search engines will produce different results.  To see just how different - compare search results using  the ranking tool on Thumbshots.com.

  • Some search engines (metasearch sites) take content from other search engines - check out the Search Engine Chart to see who takes content from whom.

  • ALL search engines will work for you better if you read their help pages to find out how you can use them most effectively.

  •  There is no quality control on the Internet or applied by search engines to the sites they index - you must evaluate the authority, currency etc. of any sites you find.
